INAH comes to Cozumel to restore the "Real Castle"

COZUMEL, MX. - The National Institute of Anthropology and History (INAH) in Quintana Roo has seven specialists for the conservation of Mayan cultural archaeological vestiges.

This is the reason the archaeological sites in Cozumel are in complete abandonment, revealed a spokesman of the institute that has already initiated some restoration work on " The Real Castle" vestiges of the millenarian civilization located on the most eastern point of Cozumel Mexico. Quintana Roo is a rich site of vestiges of pre-Hispanic establishments and it would seem that the INAH does not have interest in their conservation. In all the country, the problem is the same lack of resources and personnel. The organization has around two thousand sites of which, 32 or 33 are located in Cozumel.

At the beginning of this week, a group of archaeologists arrived in Cozumel headed by Adriana Velazquez, delegate of the federal institute. They moved immediately to "The Real Castle" site where they can only arrive by vehicles that takes nearly two hours to get there. It is located on the North and Eastern coasts. The structure belongs to the period that the archaeologists catalogue as classic delayed-terminal (800 to 900 A.C.) and was probably used as a system navigation signaling. Thes types of vestiges can also be seen throughout the continental coast of Solidaridad and Tulum, where the Mayans arrived by water. Altogether there are 15 people and approximately two tons of material and equipment that have moved to the location where they are camping. Every four years, faithful Mexican soccer fans gather at San Gabriel parish on the seedy side of Mexico City. On their knees they earnestly pray to a wooden icon of the “Child of Miracles”, which during the World Cup, is surprisingly dressed in a green Mexican jersey, red socks, white shorts, and a brand new pair of tiny Adidas soccer shoes.

These fervent prayers seeking divine (soccer) intervention have seemingly gone unanswered. Four consecutive World Cups have passed and almost 20 years since the Mexican national soccer squad have advanced beyond the round of 16, and of course, Mexico has never held the title. Although past requests seem seldom answered perhaps this year the Miracle Child, indeed, may be smiling on Mexico.

Bloomberg Says Peso Sees Best Performance of All 16 Major Currencies

Bloomberg said on Thursday that the peso has gained 7.5 percent this year against the dollar beating every other major currency. Economists predict the peso will strengthen to as much as 11 per U.S. dollar, an 11% gain, before the end of 2010. Many commercial banks and institutional investors are now buying in Mexico, hoping to see their investments ride the coattails of the peso’s increasing power. Why is the peso so strong?
