"COZUMEL 2010 CARNAVAL - Island of Peace"

Carnaval is the brightest and most festive time of year in Cozumel and a great week to visit the island.
In the Roman Catholic Church Ash Wednesday (February 17th) is the first day of lent, the season of preparation for the resurrection of Jesus Christ.
|Generally Carnaval is the week leading up to Ash Wednesday with Fat Tuesday being the big blow out finale.

The main events start on January 23rd, with the reception of the newly elected 2010 King and Queen. Celebrations continue around the island
with local festivities and live music and dancing in the parks. Organizers reported the most spectacular 4 nights of parades
along Cozumel's downtown waterfront will be from Saturday, February 13th, to Tuesday (Fat Tuesday), February 16th, 2010.
Vendors, dancers, performers, and families of all ages fill the Malecón enjoying the dazzling costumes, music, and local fare.

Every year there is a poster competition. This year's theme is "Island of Peace - A Carnaval Like Never Before".
In July of 2009 Cozumel was officially named Island of Peace by the International committee for the Banner of Peace (United Nations).
The annual artwork is collected by thousands and can be seen in many homes and vacation rentals here on the island.

"Mexico City legalizes same-sex marriage, adoptions"

The revision will change the definition of marriage to a union between two people, instead of the current version, which specifies a union between
a man and a woman. Civil groups in favor and opposed to the vote had gathered since early in the morning outside the legislative building.

In 2007, the legislators approved same-sex civil unions. Mexico City is the second major Latin American city to legalize same-sex marriage.
In November, a Buenos Aires, Argentina, court ruled that two articles in the city's civil code that say only a man and woman can be married are illegal,
paving the way for gay marriages. The mayor of Buenos Aires, Mauricio Macri, announced that his administration would not appeal the decision,
clearing the way for the gay couple who took the issue to court.

The first same-sex marriages to be held under the new law, however, was delayed after another court filed a contradictory order.

"2010 begins with a series of tax increases and government services"

MEXICO CITY, Mexico, Jan. 1, 2010 . - The first minute of 2010 come into force a series of increases in tax collections and services:
-- VAT increase from 15 to 16%.
-- Income Tax or ISR goes from 28 to 30% for people earning more than 10.298 pesos per month.
-- Increases from 2 to 3% fee for bank deposits in cash in excess of 15 thousand pesos.
-- Magna liter of gasoline goes up 8 cents, the premium increases by 9 cents per liter and diesel 8 cents.
-- Minimum wage in the geographical area to be of 57.46 pesos, those living in the geographical area B will receive 55.84 pesos in Zone C,
the minimum was at 54.47 pesos.

Mexico Investment: Slim Says Time Is Right"

Slim -- the world's third-wealthiest man, according to Forbes magazine -- praised the Mexican government's economic policies and said the
favorable exchange rate, low interest rates and promotion of fiscal stability, all add up to make for a great opportunity to invest in Mexico.

cheap credit. This, coupled with the weaker peso, helps exporters, making Mexico investment extremely attractive. The interest rate has been maintained
at a record low of 4.5 percent for four months by the Mexican central bank, as the government seeks to encourage Mexico investment and growth without driving up inflation.

The Mexican peso has also dropped 16 percent against the US dollar in the past two years, making goods manufactured in Mexico and exported to
