The Mayan Riviera is the area between Cancun and Tulum. 

Costa Maya is a new area of tourist development that the Mexican government is putting a lot of money and effort into developing. 

It is located further south beginning north at the Sian Ka’an Biological Reserve

(Punta Herrero) and stretches south along the coast to Xcalak at the southern end of Mexico’s state of Quintana Roo by Belize.

What is Costa Maya?

This new area of tourist development has some of the most pristine sandy beaches and magnificent virgin reefs remaining in the world.   The Chinchorro Bank, the largest coral atoll in the Americans is the main attraction.  This is where you can find some 240 square miles of reefs, a shallow lagoon, 3 cays, and a ship’s graveyard where few if any divers have yet to explore.  Bone fishing in the lagoons is yet another main attraction in this area.  Bird watching is divine.  I saw a Tucan on my last trip down and I always see flocks of the beautiful green parrots.  It’s a bird watchers paradise.

 

How do I get there?

 

From Cancun, rent a car

From Cozumel, take the ferry to Playa del Carmen and rent a carThen drive south on highway 307 to the Majahual exit.  Turn left and drive 67 kilometers.

Or, fly into Chetumal and drive north to the Majahual exit on your right.
